Movesets for Singles

What is a good competitive moveset for Pidgeotto? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Red/Blue Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Red/Blue generation metagame.

Physical Sweeper Pidgeotto (Retro)

Pidgeotto is a pretty decent Physical Sweeper. It is primarily designed to take down the opponent's team with brute physical power. The game was competely different back in Generation 1. In the dark days before Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type.

Double-Edge is a physical STAB-boosted 100-base power Normal-type move (has 1/4 recoil).
Gust is a physical STAB-boosted 40-base power Normal-type move that deals damage.
Sky Attack is a physical STAB-boosted 140-base power Flying-type move (charges turn 1. hits turn 2).
Wing Attack is a physical STAB-boosted 35-base power Flying-type move that deals damage.
Toxic is a status move (badly poisons the target).
Reflect is a status move (while active, your Pidgeotto's defense is doubled).

- Whirlwind
- Sand Attack

Special Sweeper Pidgeotto (Retro)

Pidgeotto is a pretty decent Special Sweeper. It's designed to take down the opponent's team with high-damaging special attacks. Gen1 meta was a totally different monster. Don't forget back before Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type.

Toxic is a status move (badly poisons the target).
Reflect is a status move (while active, your Pidgeotto's defense is doubled).
Whirlwind is a status move (no competitive use).
Sand Attack is a status move (lowers the target's accuracy by 1 stage).

Note: This moveset is considered Taunt bait! It is highly recommended you typically have atleast one move that does actual damage!
