What is a good competitive moveset for Rattata? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Red/Blue Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Red/Blue generation metagame.

Physical Sweeper Rattata (Retro)

Rattata is a spectacular Physical Sweeper. It's primary goal is to take down the opponent's team with brute physical power. From the original 151, few Pokemon could compare to Rattata at the start of the Pokemon metagame. In the dark days prior to Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type.

Double-Edge is a physical STAB-boosted 100-base power Normal-type move (has 1/4 recoil).
Body Slam is a physical STAB-boosted 85-base power Normal-type move (30% chance to paralyze the target).
Dig is a physical 100-base power Ground-type move (digs underground turn 1, strikes turn 2).
Toxic is a status move (badly poisons the target).
Substitute is a status move (Rattata takes 1/4 its max hp to put in a substitute).
