Movesets for Singles

What is a good competitive moveset for Koffing? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Red/Blue Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Red/Blue generation metagame.

Koffing is a fabulous Poison-typed Pokemon. Koffing is not a Pokemon anyone usually expects sees on the battlefield. There were no known abilities or equippable items back in the Red/Blue Pokemon games. Koffing is weak to Bug, Ground, and Psychic-typed attacks.

Physical Sweeper Koffing (Retro)

Koffing is a remarkable Physical Sweeper. It is meant to take down the opponent's team with brute physical power. Generation one was a completely different game from what it is now. Keep in mind back before Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type.

Sludge is a physical STAB-boosted 65-base power Poison-type move (40% chance to poison the target).
Tackle is a physical 35-base power Normal-type move that deals damage.
Rage is a physical 20-base power Normal-type move (lasts forever. raises Koffing's attack by 1 stage when hit).
Toxic is a status move (badly poisons the target).
Substitute is a status move (Koffing takes 1/4 its max hp to put in a substitute).

Special Sweeper Koffing (Retro)

Koffing is a marvelous Special Sweeper. It's purpose is to take down the opponent's team with high-damaging special attacks. In gen one, Koffing played quite differently. Previously before Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type.

Thunderbolt is a special 95-base power Electric-type move (10% chance to paralyze the target).
Toxic is a status move (badly poisons the target).
Substitute is a status move (Koffing takes 1/4 its max hp to put in a substitute).
Double Team is a status move (raises your Koffing's evasiveness by 1 stage).
