What is a good competitive moveset for Onix? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Red/Blue Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Red/Blue generation metagame.


Onix is a wonderful Rock and Ground-typed Pokemon. It's pretty standard to see Onix show up as a Red/Blue opponent. There were no known abilities or equippable items back in the Red/Blue Pokemon games. Onix is weak to Fighting, Grass, Ground, Ice, and Water-typed attacks.

Onix is a fabulous Physical Sweeper. It's goal is to take down the opponent's team with brute physical power. From the original 151, few Pokemon could compare to Onix at the start of the Pokemon metagame. Remember prior to Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type.

Earthquake is a physical STAB-boosted 100-base power Ground-type move that deals a immense amount of damage.
Dig is a physical STAB-boosted 100-base power Ground-type move (digs underground turn 1, strikes turn 2).
Rock Slide is a physical STAB-boosted 75-base power Rock-type move that deals damage.
Double-Edge is a physical 100-base power Normal-type move (has 1/4 recoil).
Body Slam is a physical 85-base power Normal-type move (30% chance to paralyze the target).
Harden is a status move (raises your Onix's defense by 1 stage).
