Movesets for Singles
What is a good competitive moveset for Onix? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Gold/Silver Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Gold/Silver generation metagame.
Onix is a fabulous Rock and Ground-typed Pokemon. Onix is not a Pokemon anyone usually expects sees on the battlefield. There were no known abilities back in the Gold/Silver Pokemon games. Onix is weak to Fighting, Grass, Ground, Ice, Steel, and Water-typed attacks.
Item: Eviolite / Life Orb
- Earthquake / Dig
- Double-Edge / Return
- Rock Slide / Rock Throw

Physical Sweeper Onix (Retro)
Onix is a pretty decent Physical Sweeper. The purpose of this moveset is to take down the opponent's team with brute physical power. Don't forget before Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type. Onix is not a Pokemon anyone usually expects sees on the battlefield without an Eviolite. If Eviolite is held by a Pokémon that is not fully evolved, it will raises the Defense and Special Defense of that Pokemon by 50%. Focus Sash helps protect Onix from being one-shotted and allowing it to atleast use a crucial move when brought out.
♦ Dig is a physical STAB-boosted 60-base power Ground-type move (digs underground turn 1, strikes turn 2).
♦ Double-Edge is a physical 120-base power Normal-type move (has 1/4 recoil).
♦ Return is a physical 0-base power Normal-type move (max 102 power at maximum happiness).
♦ Rock Slide is a physical STAB-boosted 75-base power Rock-type move (30% chance to flinch the target).
♦ Rock Throw is a physical STAB-boosted 50-base power Rock-type move that deals damage.
♦ Rock Smash is a physical 20-base power Fighting-type move (50% chance to lower the target's defense by 1 stage).
Item: Eviolite / Life Orb
Special Sweeper Onix (Retro)
Onix is a phenomenal Special Sweeper. This moveset is designed to take down the opponent's team with high-damaging special attacks. In the dark days prior to Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type. Onix is not a Pokemon anyone usually expects sees on the battlefield but Eviolite changes that. If Eviolite is held by a Pokémon that is not fully evolved, it will raises the Defense and Special Defense of that Pokemon by 50%. Focus Sash helps protect Onix from being one-shotted and allowing it to atleast use a crucial move when brought out.
♦ Toxic is a status move (badly poisons the target).
♦ Roar is a status move (forces the target to switch to a random ally).
♦ Protect is a status move (prevents moves from affecting your Onix this turn).
Note: This moveset is considered Taunt bait! It is highly recommended you typically have atleast one move that does actual damage!
