What is a good competitive moveset for Chimchar? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Diamond/Pearl Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Diamond/Pearl generation metagame.
Chimchar is an interesting Fire-typed Pokemon. Chimchar is not a Pokemon anyone usually expects sees on the battlefield. Chimchar can be quite a contender in the LC tier (Little Cup). Chimchar is weak to Ground, Rock, and Water-typed attacks.

Physical Sweeper Chimchar
Chimchar is a spectacular Physical Sweeper. It's goal is to take down the opponent's team with brute physical power. Choice Band will increase the damage of Chimchar's physical moves by 1.5x at the cost of locking you into the first move you pick. Life Orb boosts the power of Chimchar's damaging moves by 1.3x but it then loses 1/10 its max HP immediately after the attack. With Blaze, at 1/3 or less of its max hp Chimchar's fire-type attacks have 1.5x power. Thunder Punch was added to provide additional threat coverage.
♦ Fire Punch is a physical STAB-boosted 75-base power Fire-type move (10% chance to burn the target).
♦ Shadow Claw is a physical 70-base power Ghost-type move (high critical hit ratio).
♦ Thunder Punch is a physical 75-base power Electric-type move (10% chance to paralyze the target).
♦ Return is a physical 0-base power Normal-type move (max 102 power at maximum happiness).
♦ Brick Break is a physical 75-base power Fighting-type move (destroys screens, even if the target is immune).
♦ Double Kick is a physical 30-base power Fighting-type move (hits 2 times in one turn).

Chimchar is a decent Special Sweeper. It tries to take down the opponent's team with high-damaging special attacks. Focus Sash helps protect Chimchar from being one-shotted and allowing it to atleast use a crucial move when brought out. Choice Specs will increase the damage of Chimchar's special moves by 1.5x but will lock you into the first move you pick. With Blaze, at 1/3 or less of its max hp Chimchar's fire-type attacks have 1.5x power.
