What is a good competitive moveset for Articuno? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Gold/Silver Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Gold/Silver generation metagame.
Articuno is an interesting Ice and Flying-typed Pokemon. It's super common to find yourself dealing with Articuno when battling in the 2nd generation meta. There were no known abilities back in the Gold/Silver Pokemon games. Articuno is weak to Electric, Fire, Rock, and Steel-typed attacks.

Articuno is a legendary Physical Sweeper. It tries to take down the opponent's team with brute physical power. Remember before Generation IV, a move's damage category was determined by its type.
♦ Return is a physical 0-base power Normal-type move (max 102 power at maximum happiness).
♦ Sky Attack is a physical STAB-boosted 140-base power Flying-type move (charges turn 1. hits turn 2).
♦ Gust is a physical STAB-boosted 40-base power Flying-type move (power doubles during fly).
♦ Steel Wing is a physical 70-base power Steel-type move (10% chance to raise your Articuno's defense by 1 stage).
♦ Rock Smash is a physical 20-base power Fighting-type move (50% chance to lower the target's defense by 1 stage).

♦ Bubble Beam is a special 65-base power Water-type move (10% chance to lower the target's speed by 1 stage).
