What is a good competitive moveset for Haunter? These builds have been optimized for Pokemon competing in Sword/Shield Single Battles. The movesets and EVs have been specifically calibrated to deal the most amount of damage to the largest group of potentially common opponents and typing threats for the Sword/Shield generation metagame.
Haunter is a pretty decent Ghost and Poison-typed Pokemon. Haunter is not a Pokemon anyone usually expects sees on the battlefield. Haunter is weak to Dark, Ghost, Ground, and Psychic-typed attacks.

Special Sweeper Haunter (Levitate)
Haunter is a marvelous Special Sweeper for single battles. It's primary goal is to take down the opponent's team with high-damaging special attacks. Focus Sash helps protect Haunter from being one-shotted and allowing it to atleast use a crucial move when brought out. Choice Specs will increase the damage of Haunter's special moves by 1.5x but will lock you into the first move you pick. With Levitate, Haunter is immune to damaging Ground-typed moves (except Thousand Arrows). Levitate also makes Haunter unaffected by the effects of Spikes, Arena Trap, Toxic Spikes, Sticky Web, Rototiller or terrain effects. Keep in mind that Ingrain, Gravity, Smack down and the Iron ball item will nullify Levitate's effect.
◆ Sludge Bomb is a special STAB-boosted 90-base power Poison-type move (30% chance to poison the target).
◆ Shadow Ball is a special STAB-boosted 80-base power Ghost-type move (20% chance to lower the target's special defense by 1 stage).
◆ Hex is a special STAB-boosted 65-base power Ghost-type move (power doubles if the target has a status ailment).
◆ Foul Play is a physical 95-base power Dark-type move (uses target's attack stat in damage calculation).

Haunter Special Tank (Haunted House)
Haunter is an interesting Special Tank for single battles. It tries to take a decent amount of hits from special attacks while dealing some decent damage. With Levitate, Haunter is immune to damaging Ground-typed moves (except Thousand Arrows). Levitate also makes Haunter unaffected by the effects of Spikes, Arena Trap, Toxic Spikes, Sticky Web, Rototiller or terrain effects. Keep in mind that Ingrain, Gravity, Smack down and the Iron ball item will nullify Levitate's effect. With a Black Sludge equipped to it, each turn, if Haunter is a poison type, restores 1/16 max hp; loses 1/8 if not.
